The Missing Ingredient In D& I Is Us

This is a DisruptHR talk about diversity and inclusion. But it’s not about HR D&I. It’s about you and I.

How many friends and acquaintances do you have who are of a different race, a different background, who have different interests? Or, as Hussain Dhanani asked his Vancouver, BC audience,”How many of you can say that you spend your time outside of work with a diverse set of people?”

His own circle is broadly diverse; more diverse than most of us. Still, he said, he could do better. “What if the biggest opportunity lies not in company policy but in each one of us?” Dhanani said. “Why not start living and breathing diversity and inclusion and take that to the work and make a change?”

How do we do that?

“Let’s take a look at our personal social circles and take an inventory. How do we measure up?”

The second step, Dhanani said, is to actively get out to meet people who are not like us. And if doing it live, and in person is too “scary,” Dhanani suggests by following someone on social media who is different from you.

“If we take a strong initiative and internalize the values that we’re pushing at work, and look at how we see each other as equal, I think we have a really big opportunity to make an impact in the world.”

In partnership with DisruptHR, TLNT presents some of the best Disrupt presentations from events across North America and now the world. Disrupt talks are modeled on the TEDx concept: Short, to the point talks on all things HR — talent, culture and technology.

DISRUPT is an information exchange designed to energize, inform and empower people in the HR field.

Founded by Disrupt's CEO Jennifer McClure, events are organized by volunteer teams working with Disrupt staff who assist in the planning. Events have a maximum of 14 speakers, who get 5 minutes and no more than 20 slides for their presentation.
