Let’s Talk About Sex

Did the headline catch your attention? Were you curious and yet, just a little uncomfortable? That’s a point Candice Gottlieb-Clark hints at in her DisruptHR talk, appropriately titled “Let’s Talk About Sex.”

How many words do we have for sexual identity these days, Gottlieb-Clark asks her Los Angeles Disrupt audience. At least 7 in addition to the traditional man and woman, she says, explaining what each of the LGBTQIA letters mean. Understanding this is important to HR because “this is a growing population.”

Educating and sensitizing today’s workforce to those who identify as other than “straight” in the traditional sense is not just desirable, it is essential says Gottlieb-Clark, president of Dynamic Team Solutions.

So what should HR do? She lays out 5 actions, beginning with “Get in front of it.” “You need to have policies that tell every employee what is expected, what will be done, how to behave.”

In 5 minutes, Gottlieb-Clark describes the state of gender identification today, and outlines the steps HR needs to take to create an accommodating, accepting workplace.

And just in case you were wondering, the title and Gottlieb-Clark’s opening rap is from Salt-n-Pepa’s 1991 album Blacks’ Magic.
