If You Want to Have Impact You Need Influence. Here’s How to Get It

Do you believe HR professionals are in the best position in the world to make an impact?

Jennifer McClure does. That’s what the HR veteran and CEO of DisruptHR and Unbridled Talent told her Kansas City audience. But it doesn’t happen automatically, just because you may be an HR manager. New or young HR professionals have little authority and even less power. That holds true, too, for many older and higher level HR professionals who lack the influence to have an impact.

Starting out 31 years ago as a “Personnel Manager,” McClure set out to develop influence. She recognized, “Being able to build influence in the organization I could actually get things done as a person who supervised no one in the organization, who had no power or authority.”

There are several ways to become influential, she said, but it starts with building trust and relationships. “If your goal is to move forward in your career and to move to the top spot and have power and impact, you need to first focus on building trust and relationship.”

You do that, McClure says, by helping others get what they want; by leading by example; by creating a vision. That’s the topline. McClure goes on to outline 7 steps to getting the influence an HR professional needs to have an impact. Take the next 5 minutes to get the details to make you an influential HR leader so you can get things done.
