How Strategic Can You Be When You Plan Parties and Police Policies?

It’s hard to have influence and credibility in the business when you spend your time planning the company party and sending memos about appropriate Halloween costumes.

They may have value, but “these sorts of things mask the true purpose of HR,” bemoans Jaysa Toet, a partner at Acuity HR Solutions.

“So what sorts of action can we take to ensure HR’s credible and has influence?” Toet asks, speaking to a DisruptHR audience in Winnipeg, Canada this spring.

It starts by being proactive. “Credible HR professionals are proactive,” Toet says, explaining that means they don’t just focus on putting out fires. They also get things done. They know to delegate non-HR tasks and how to say no. “HR can leverage other functions like admin staff for admin duties” she says. And “social committees for the employee side of things.”

“Credible HR professionals understand the importance of every interaction. They set and manage expectations with their time, and their role and they do what they say they’re going to do.”
