A CFO Discusses Culture and Profits

Here’s something HR professionals don’t often hear: a CFO advocating for that company culture be measured as closely as financial performance.

Now don’t think that Lance Shipp, CFO of Pegasus Logistics Group, has gone all touchy-feely. “I’m a self-proclaimed schizophrenic,” he admitted to a Dallas DisruptHR group several months ago. “I’m a culture champion, but I’m also a bottom line guy.”

As a bottom line guy though, Shipp said he’s read the studies and seen the positive financial results companies get when they focus on building a positive company culture and empowering their employees. “You focus first on the employee. They’ll then take care of your customer because they’re engaged. That will drive long term revenue and profits into your company.”

“It’s a better business model,” Shipp declared. So besides all the usual financial metrics, develop KPIs around things like engagement, turnover, medical claims, quality of life benefits and others, he instructed.
